About Me

I’m Madeleine Welsh, a writer and public speaker focused on how education systems and workplace environments shape the experiences of neurodivergent individuals.

I am the author of The Cost of Being Differen, a book that explores my story and how education systems influence the identity, confidence, and long-term outcomes of neurodivergent students. The book examines how support systems that appear helpful on paper can sometimes unintentionally create stigma, misunderstanding, or pressure to conform.

My work explores the ways institutions are often built around narrow expectations of how people should think, behave, learn, and perform. While policies for support and accommodation exist in many schools and workplaces, the reality experienced by neurodivergent individuals often looks very different.

Through my writing, workshops and public speaking/presentations, I examine the gap between these policies and what actually happens in practice. Much of my work focuses on how neurodivergent behavior is frequently misunderstood within traditional systems.

I aim to encourage deeper conversations about how institutions can better understand and support people who think differently. My talks explore many topics on how systems can evolve to better support diverse ways of thinking and learning.

Ultimately, my goal is not simply to critique existing systems, but to encourage thoughtful reflection about how small structural changes can create environments where neurodivergent individuals are better understood, supported, and able to thrive.
